This collection of essays on football and (P)politics presents multidisciplinary scholarship from experienced and established academics together with dynamic, emerging scholars from across the globe. Football is one of the most hyper-commodified sports globally. As such, there has been increased investment in football, and it has gained traction within the academy with greater demand for football-related programmes in higher education and within the football industry. Moreover, in the current financial, political, social and cultural environment – football offers us one lens with which to view and analyse society and social issues. This book aims to contribute to that growing field (Hodges, 2018; Kossakowski et al., 2020; Rojo-Labaien et al., 2020), offering scholarship that directly engages with the world around us. The study of football may be one of the most fascinating lenses with which to view society. Indeed, football is both apolitical and political, at different points, degrees and contexts, which in turn makes almost every act political. From China’s block out of Mesut Özil to the social activism of Marcus Rashford, to taking the knee, to being ownership neutral – football is a political heavyweight.
